did you know....

Did you know that American Crows gather in large communal roosts at night? It is quite common in Ottawa to see hundreds and hundreds of these birds come together at dusk. Quite the sight to see and the noise, the noise is just crazy. Imagine all of these birds crowing at the same time. To be honest it kinda gives me the heebie jeebies. Anyways, this wasn't the first time that I've seen these birds come together but it was the first time that I had my camera by my side.
What do you think? Creepy or cool?

  1. They do that here where I live, too! I think it's fascinating. But I find everything about crows fascinating. Did you know that some of them live to be over 100 years old? I love watching them and wondering if some of them watched this village being built.

  2. wow! great images and I had no idea they could be 100!? seriously!? I find it creepy in a cool way :) always been fascinated with crows, I imagine however, if they did not move on after some time, I would find it disturbingly annoying!

  5. Correction: it's actually Ravens which are rumored to be able to live to 100. Not sure what the difference is between crows and ravens, though!

  6. well as you all can probably tell- I love birds (just the title of my blog should give that away) but still there is something a bit creepy about all these hundreds of birds all together. Power in numbers I guess. Reminds me of The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock...a really good but scary movie.

  7. Ha! Totally creepy ^_^ But also pretty awesome. In the park across from our place there's always an intense pigeon gathering on the powerlines. We figure they are having a meeting of some sort.

  8. Mmm, it's creepy for me. But in another way like what some have commented. Creepy in a cool way.

    Good photos, by the way.

  11. hahaha I had to laugh at your comment Margie. Cawing- it's just not a nice word. Although I do have to admit- I love crows and ravens. There is something mischievous and comical about them.

  12. That's it! Exactly what I saw!! I still wonder their reason for gathering like this. I wonder if there was something (an animal) dead below?
    Thansk for sharing; now I know I wasn't "targeted"...hah!
    Cheers,
