our last Northern adevture

With Winslow’s family here for their first Yukon visit, we then have able to play tourist one last time in this beautiful territory that we have called home for the last 5 years.
For just over a week, we have been so fortunate to have this time to show Winslow’s parents all the beautiful sights and places that we love here, and we have been able to say our goodbyes as well to these same places (which I’ll admit, has been hard at times).
For the May long weekend, as tradition has it, we took a trip down to beautiful Skagway, where we enjoyed the beautiful mountains, delicious sea salty air, the yummy Thai food and gorgeous hikes along the coast. Winslow, the kids and his parents took the White Pass Train ride ( a must see for anyone visiting). I had already done it twice, so I stayed back, grabbed a chai latte, walked down to the pier (saw a seal!) and then hit up the flats down by the water with my happy puppy Ryder.
To be there one last time, was a bit surreal. Skagway is a place with so many beautiful memories for me.  Going with Sarah, Allison Potvin and the kids, when Alli came back for the 1 year of Mike’s passing. Watching Winslow and JM (Natalie’s husband) march in the 4th of July parade.  Going on the train twice with Noah (once with Katia when she was a baby). Having my first ever girl’s night away with Sarah and Natalie. I had to say goodbye to Skagway, the little place that we would go to escape,  a place that stole my heart. It’s hard to say goodbye.
The rest of our time has been spent camping in our RV at a campsite very close to town. We have had the  convenience of staying in our own little abode, but also have had the luxury to hop downtown for ice creams, park dates, trips to the Farmer’s Market, trolley rides and meals out. The children have had a blast, ripping around the campsite on their bikes, playing at the park and just generally being dirty and outdoors. We have loved the BBQs, campfires and proximity to town.
And finally, Winslow and I were able to take our much overdue birthday date (his birthday gift from me), a fight seeing excursion over the  and St.Elias mountain range.  This area is only accessible by plane, and is home to the world’s largest non polar icefields, as well as Canada’s largest mountain (Mt. Logan). To see it all was absolutely breathtaking and majestic. It was a once in a life time experience and I am so thankful that we were able to take that opportunity.
Our time here in Whitehorse, Skagway and at Silver City (the Icefield Discovery site), has been such a lovely way to cap off our time in the Yukon.  In having this time together and by seeing these things one last time, I feel that we are getting to say goodbye properly and we have having closure from our time here.
It’s been 5 years since we packed up our lives in Hamilton and moved up here to the Yukon. I remember just how little Noah was (11 months old!) and how nervous I was about starting all over in such a foreign place.
So many opportunities have come to us since moving here and so many memories have been made. The friends we made here, the holidays we have shared with our Northern family, the babies that were born, the homes that were moved into, the good times and difficult times, the lessons that have been learnt, watching our children grow.  The Yukon has been home to us for 5 amazing years, and it is going to be very hard to leave.
I leave you with a selection of pictures taken from the last week. More beautiful memories made.
