my journey

It's late at night, I have a hot cup of David's Tea next to me (oolong long life for those who care), and I am editing photos. 

I am just coming to the end of a busy season of photography and I have to take a moment to say just how thankful I am for the work that I do. 

For the longest time, I felt so strange saying that I have a business. A business woman, I am not. I started taking photos for the love of it. When I saw simple beautiful things around me, I would grab my camera and snap away. A pair of baby shoes neatly lined up on the wood floor, a fresh batch of homemade cookies, leaves scattered on the side walk, these were all things that would catch my eye and were photo worthy to me.

It was the Spring of 2009 that I did my very first photo session.  I did an engagement session for my good friend Allison and her fiance Dan. I remember not knowing a THING about how my camera worked and I just coasted by on automatic. Still, despite my lack of experience at the time, I look back on those pictures fondly because they were a starting point for me.

In the summer of 2009 I had my sweet Noah and he became my go to model for all thing photography related (so did his little friends that I met that year too). In the Spring of 2010, I took on 2 more photo sessions and became brave enough to start up a Facebook page and photography blog ( I don't use this blog anymore).

In the summer of 2010 we moved up to Whitehorse and before doing that I made contact with friends and blogging acquaitances to set up some sessions upon my arrival. Soon after that, the word spread that I was available for work~!

Since then I have had a steady stream of work coming in. Whitehorse is such a unique community, in that we have many young families, and it just so happens that I like to photograph families (and children, and babies, and couples who are in love too). Because Whitehorse is a small town comparatively, word of mouth travels quickly and for me, it's been the best way for me to advertise myself (that and Facebook).

With well over 65 photo sessions done this year, I still sometimes am in disbelief that I am where I am at this moment. I sit here absolutely humbled and thankful that I get to do something that I love to do and that I get to share my talent with others. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing that I have captured memories and time for a family. I know that this is important to my clients.

So these past two weeks have been a busy time. I just wrapped up (with the help of Winslow and Leanne), two weeks of Holiday Mini Sessions that went very very well. I am not (now) editing those photos and am eager to get them out to my clients.

After these Holiday Sessions, I have a maternity, 2 newborn and an engagement session lined up (and a few more mini sessions). Once I finish up those sessions, I am looking forward to a bit of a quiet December. I plan on spending December with the kids doing baking, crafting, outdoor activities and hopefully hosting a Christmas shindig (or two). And that will be that. A nice end to what has turned into a surprisingly busy and successful year.

I'm very much looking forward to some nice quiet time before it picks up again in the new year.
